Beer Legacy by Wind Power

Located in southern Finland, Nurmijärvi has a rich history of alcohol production – alcoholic beverages have been produced for over a century. This proud tradition of craftsmanship lives on in the region today: Grönbacka Brewery, established in 2018, stands as the first and oldest commercial brewery of Nurmijärvi. This family-owned microbrewery is leading the way in environmental responsibility, notably through the pioneering use of wind power for energy production.

“We always bottle according to orders, aiming to minimize storage time and maintain freshness,” says Andreas Wennström.

Grönbacka Brewery’s environmentally friendly approach reflects a responsible attitude towards business and a commitment to minimize the ecological footprint associated with brewing, reducing their carbon footprint, and contributing to a cleaner environment. By harnessing the power of wind provided by the local power company, Grönbacka Brewery exemplifies how sustainable practices can be seamlessly incorporated into the brewing process.

Their commitment to sustainable development can also be seen in the raw materials of the beer. The brewery uses malt from Finnish Viking Malt to ensure the quality and consistency of the malt component in their beers – some of the malt even comes from the fields of Nurmijärvi itself. Additionally, pure natural groundwater in Nurmijärvi plays a crucial role in achieving the clarity and purity of the final product, allowing the natural flavours of the ingredients to shine through in every sip.

The Brewery of the Family

The journey of Grönbacka Brewery began three decades ago in father Krister Wennström’s garage. “Our family has always been a do-it-yourself kind, from making jams to crafting sausages. One day, we had the idea to create our own beer,” he fondly recalls.

The decision to transition from a home-based operation to a commercial venture was largely influenced by Wennström’s sons, Andreas, and Niklas. “We encouraged the idea of entering the brewing business when the craft beer boom had not yet taken off. It was clear from the beginning that Niklas and I would be involved in the brewery’s operation because we are a family business,” Andreas explains.

The Wennström family actively participates in the installation and maintenance of their brewing equipment, a hands-on approach that allows them to swiftly troubleshoot any issues that may arise, thanks to their comprehensive understanding of the brewing process. In the world of brewing, Grönbacka Brewery’s story is a testament to the harmonious blend of tradition, craftsmanship, and sustainability. This eco-conscious brewing is leaving an indelible mark on the world of craft beer.
