The heart of the operation

Kesko will invest over €300 million in building an 82,000 square metre logistics centre for Onninen and K-Auto in Hyvinkää, Finland. Construction of the logistics centre began in October 2022 and will be completed in stages between 2025 and 2030. Kesko has the leading position in Northern Europe’s building and technical trade division. The business serves professional builders, technical wholesale customers, and consumers.

The new logistics centre will be located in Northern Hyvinkää near the E12 motorway, where Kesko purchased a 42-hectare area. The new logistics centre will span over 80,000 square metres, most of which is reserved for Onninen. It will replace Onninen’s current logistics centre, also located in Hyvinkää, and be the workplace of some 400–500 logistics professionals.

“In terms of Kesko’s business, Hyvinkää is a significant place, and the location of the new plot is logistically excellent. Onninen has a long history and a good cooperation network in Hyvinkää, and in addition, permanence is also an advantage for the staff. The cooperation with the city has gone exceptionally well, enabling the project to progress quickly.

Environmental responsibility is essential to us, so we will use, for example, geothermal heat and solar panels in the new warehouse. For the first time in Kesko’s history, an ecologist is also involved in the investment project, which takes stock of the environmental values of the plot and prepares a proposal to compensate them.” says Jorma Rauhala, President of Kesko’s building and technical trade division and Deputy CEO at an event organized by the municipality of Hyvinkää. When the logistics centre is ready, the goal is to ensure the building’s energy efficiency is the best A class. The building has been evaluated as Very Good according to BREEAM environmental rating, Europe’s leading environmental rating system.

In addition to Onninen, spare parts warehousing for K-Auto in Kesko’s car trade division will move to the new centre. “K-auto’s spare parts are the same products as Onninen’s, so we get a synergy advantage by combining the warehouses under the same roof. The central warehouse is the heart of our operations, as our customers have strict requirements regarding transportation, and they must function every day. The new plot of land also enables the growth of operations in the future.” says Rauhala.
